Uploading Videos FAQThis is a featured page

We're going to use this page to inform about how you can upload videos and provide the specific directions for how we'll be doing it for the Break Silence effort. If you are still figuring out the wiki, you might want to check out the Getting Started page, but also definitely feel free to contact Harry with questions or problems, but it'd also be great if you wanted to write it out in the discussion thread at the bottom of the page as it's extremely doubtful that you are the only one with the same issue!

With all that said, below you'll find the point by point directions for how to generally upload videos and how we'll be doing it here:

Uploading a Video to You Tube

If you do not already have a You Tube account, please sign up for an account. As of now we have no plans to make an official Break Silence account as I worry that it'd be limiting in terms of the videos that will be sent to the wiki, as I'm hoping activists across the country send us their already uploaded videos (this may change as we move forward though).

Once you have made your account or signed in to your existing one, you can upload video files permissible for You Tube---the biggest thing to keep in mind here is that you can't upload a video over 10 minutes unless you have a special directors account (which we do not have at this time). Keep in mind that if the video is too long it can be edited down or broken into parts, but it will be easier to keep this limitation in mind as you are filming for projects specifically for this effort.

When your video file is ready, you can then upload it to You Tube either directly from your camera or from it being saved on your computer. If you have one of the Campus Progress flip cams you can "flip" the USB jack on the side and plug it right into your computer, and any other digital camera (including camera phones) will have some plug or cord or something to do this as well. Once you have it plugged in and/or saved to your computer, you are ready to click the yellow Upload button on the upper right hand side on You Tube's site.

Clicking the Upload button will take you to a screen that says "Video File Upload" on top, and you should click the "Uload Video" below this header on the right hand side of the screen. A pop up will open where you will need to specify what file you are uploading, and here you will have to find the particular file either from your camera or computer. If it's still on your camera, you can access these files by clicking the "computer" tab where you will see a listing of your different computer drivers and anything you have plugged in (including your camera). Click the button for your camera and then follow through to your specific video. If you are using one of the Campus Progress flip cams, you will have to click through a few folders to find these videos, as they are stored within the "DCIM" folder and then the "Video 101" folder within that one.

Once you double click on the video you want, it will automatically start uploading. You will then have the opportunity to specify the title of the video as well as any tags (which will help for searching for these videos if you tag them with the individual event it covers). These demarcations will help us as we organize the videos, though you can also change them later on if time is an issue.

It should only take a few minutes for shorter videos to upload, but longer ones can take a while (especially depending on your internet connection). Once it finishes uploading though, you can click on the "my videos" tab and access the video. At first it will show a camera icon and say it is "processing", and it will take a certain amount of time before you can watch the video. However, once that is finished you can watch the video there and then post the video to this wiki, a blog, or any other site you have access to through copying and pasting the link to the video or the embed code (both of which will be on the right hand side of the video).

Uploading a Video to the Wiki

Once your video is on You Tube (or you have found an already existing video you want to upload), it is pretty quick and easy to upload it to the wiki. First, you need to go to the page you want to upload it to. This page will either be the specific event where you want to place the video, and/or it will be on your personal wiki page where we will be organizing them as well.

Once you are on the right page, click the Easy Edit button with the pencil on it on the upper left hand side, and you will see the "Easy Edit Toolbar" come up on the screen. Click the "Video" button on the left hand side below the Font tab, and then you will see an "Add You Tube Video" pop up come on the screen. Click the link on the right hand side of the pop up that says "Add URL or Embed", and the screen will show a box with the directions to "Enter the URL or the Embed for your video". Copy and paste the video the link or emed code there, and then you are ready to click the "add You Tube Video" button.

It will be pretty quick to upload, and then you will see a You Tube box come onto the screen. You will not be able to watch the video until you close the Easy Edit Toolbar by clicking "save", but then the video will show up on the page and you will be able to watch it as many times and organize as many of these videos however you may wish!
