HUNGER CLEANUP SUCCESSES

WISPIRG's Hunger and Homelessness campaign hosted another very succesful Hunger Cleanup event this past Saturday, April 4th (see below for event details). Over sixty volunteers went out into the community and served at various sites. Also, volunteers raised over $5,800 leading up to the event, exceeding our original goal by almost $1,000. As a result, we've re-adjusted our goal to $6,500 by this Thursday, April 9th. In other words, WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP!!! If you're interested in making a contribution to our fundraisng efforts ,visit www.hungercleanup.org where you can make a donation to our team, the WISPIRG Badgers. Fifty percent of the money raised will go to a local organization called the Road Home, which provides emergency rental assistance to families transitioning from poverty. An addtional thirty-five percent goes to a national board of poverty experts who work to establish solutions through research and education. The final fifteen percent will provide emergency medical supplies for refugees in Darfur, Sudan as well as educational support for at-risk Zimbabwean girls.

HUNGER CLEANUP - SATURDAY, APRIL 4TH

The UW-Madison chapter of the Wisconsin Student Public Interest Research Group (WISPIRG) is hosting a campus and community-wide fundraising and service-a-thon project known as the Hunger Cleanup. Members of WISPIRG’s Hunger and Homelessness campaign are teaming up with fellow students, friends, and community members in an effort to raise at least $5,000 for homelessness at the local, national, and international levels. After collecting donations and contributions, fundraising teams will gather on April 4th for a day of volunteering and service throughout the Madison area. The event’s kickoff is to be held at 9:00 a.m. on library mall. Volunteering will conclude around 3:00 p.m., and a closing celebration will follow at the east campus mall.

The Hunger Cleanup is a nation-wide event that began in 1984 at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Motivated by the Ethiopian fammine of the early 1980s and rising homeless rates in America, a small group of Aquinas students decided to take an active role in fighting poverty. With the help of other students from local colleges and high schools, the first Hunger Cleanup took place and generated $10,000 for hunger and homelessness relief efforts. Today, hundreds of students and citizens across the country participate in Hunger Cleanup events. In its twenty-five years of existence, the Hunger Cleanup has raised over $2 million with the help of over 150,000 volunteers.
